Women in Science

As you well know by now, we use project or inquiry based learning in our homeschool. This allows the children to follow their passions, and also enables us to weave many subjects into one project.

Inspiration can truly come from anywhere. You can read about some more of our projects here.

Big Bean is very, very interested and passionate about science. She collects rocks and fossils, studies nature and is a keen chemist. It is also a fabulous subject for her because it is creative and hands-on. Rather than being writing based.

During our latest book shop trip we purchased this amazing book, Women in Science by Rachel Ignotofsky.

No need to teach!

I thought I would write a post about a subject I am most passionate. It is a topic that I feel more and more strongly about as we immerse ourselves deeper into our unschooling way of life.

It is what I like to refer to as pushiness; the act of pushing ones children to do stuff/learn stuff before they are ready and able to do the stuff for themselves.

A Summer Day in Our Homeschool Life

This post is part of a group of posts that gives you a glimpse into a regular day in our homeschool life. You can read all of the posts here.

Today was hot, I mean for the UK it was basically tropical. We all woke up sweaty and with little energy because the heat has been making it so difficult to sleep at night. Today was another day where we have stayed home and the pace has been slow, so it feels like we haven't really accomplished much. When in reality we have done loads today.

I thought it would be nice to share how we have spent this hot sticky summers day.

Shout Out to Homeschool Daddy

The question I am most commonly asked by non-homeschool parents is "How can you stand to be around your children 24 hours a day?".

Of course I find this totally bizarre. I truly love being around my children all day, in all honesty I think I prefer their company to that of many adults! But this got me thinking about why other parents feel this way, am I a total weirdo? I am certainly in the minority. Most parents can't wait for holidays to be over to get their kids back to school - I used to sob the night before term began again.

I don't want to give the impression that my life and children are perfect. They are not.

Our Maths Shelf

When it comes to maths, as with everything, we don't follow a curriculum. I really believe that maths is something that is picked up through practical tasks in everyday life.

My children can weigh ingredients when following a recipe, they can measure how tall they are with a tape measure in inches and centimetres, they have a basic understanding of money, they understand percentages, they can tell the time and can share things equally between people. There is probably a whole lot more mathematical stuff that they can do but I don't really think about it much, I just trust that they are gaining the knowledge they need to get through life.

In our home ed shed we have a dedicated maths shelf, which is full of equipment for the girls to use when they need to, or when they feel like it.

A Homeschool Birthday: Mermaid Style

“The best education does not happen at a desk, but rather engaged in everyday living – hands on, exploring, in active relationship with life.” ~ Vince Gowmon

Little Bean turned 6 this week. I have found it a little overwhelming if I am honest , my youngest baby is now a little girl. No longer can she be grouped into the pre-school age bracket of 0-5. She can now have Calpol six-plus- that is how you know they're really onto the next stage! It has been a very bittersweet week for me, I love watching my babies grow, I adore observing them change and flourish. But I also feel a little sad as I realise how fast life passes by, how much I have to treasure each fleeting moment, each special stage of childhood. Luckily homeschooling allows me to be around all day every day to squeeze as many mama memories out of my babes as I can before they grow up and fly the nest.

We celebrated all week - the perks of home education! Mermaids are a huge favourite thing of Little Beans at the moment, so we celebrated with all things mermaid!

Battle of Lincoln 1217

There is lots of buzz and excitement currently in our small, beautiful city of Lincoln due to the arrival of some very famous knights. It is to commemorate the little known Battle of Lincoln 1217 - which I am very embarrassed to say, I knew nothing about said battle or the formidable Nicola De La Haye who held Lincoln castle under siege. So it really has been a learning experience for the whole family! You can read all about the knights trail here
